Building Construction Students Receive Writing Awards

Every year the English Department at Virginia Tech produces Composition at Virginia Tech: Written, Spoken, and Visual Composition, a book which is then used as one of the principal texts in the following year's Freshman English classes. Featured in the book are a handful of essays and projects written and conducted by Virginia Tech Freshman English students and selected from amongst all work submitted by each student in Freshman English, a great honor considering that English 1105, 1006 and H1204 see 6,000 students annually.

This year two of the twelve essays chosen for next year's text were contributed by Building Construction students. Rivers Kelly's essay, "Pepsi vs. Coca-Cola", was written for an assignment on popular culture fieldwork in English 1106. Danny Southerland, wrote his essay, "The Use of Make-up and Costume in Creating Dracula" for an English 1105 assignment on the analysis of make-up and costuming in film. Congratulations to the honorees and thank you to the English department for helping facilitate the growth and development of such strong communication skills in our future graduates.
